Knowing when is it time to move out
Sometimes, knowing when to move out of your home to an office might be the difference between a successful business and an unsuccessful one.As there are many reasons to work from home, there are many reasons to move out when time comes, your kids and spouse just can`t figure out that closed door thing, the space is just too limited or the TV and fridge or pets are too much of a temptation, time can come and force you to leave the comfort of your home from several reasons:
- Interruptions spouse and kids just keep opening your door and interrupting your work, your business forward state of mind, or just drive you nuts with the noise right next to your home office. When the family grows it becomes even harder to keep concentrated, and the once ideal workplace becomes a nightmare to work in. This leaves a choice between working in a terrible working environment and relocating the business to an out of home office.
- Growth A successful and growing business demands growing amounts of storage space, new equipment and sometimes new employees that can get your office really crowded. Renting an outside office space might be the only solution because you just can`t expect your employees to work in an environment that reminds more of a sardine can than an office... also zoning laws might forbid hiring more than one employee in a home business.
- Loneliness Some people work better alone, they need their quiet spot and ideal conditions, and they just sit back and make superman look like a snail next to their productivity. On the other hand, some just can`t possibly stay alone for long and try to compensate the loss of company by constantly visiting friends, neighbors, inviting friends over and so on. This can be fixed simply by leaving to an outside office, or maybe renting room in a working office thus not being lonely. The working hours are defined and not as lonely. For this type of people, this can be the difference between wasting your whole day doing nothing productive and maximizing the productiveness of your whole day to a maximum.
The advantages of moving your business out of your home range from better productivity, more space to more growth options - of course, with any advantage, come a few disadvantages, but it`s probably worth it.
- Your daily commute will be longer, and with it comes loss of time and a bit frustration
- Your expenses will rise because of rent on the office and loss of tax refund on the rent on the room you`re using for working at home.
- You`ll have some extra expenses furnishing your new office with office furniture. You`ll probably have clients coming into the office and you won`t be able to use your kitchen table as a conference table anymore...
- Remember that all these expenses increase but usually your income will grow proportionally because you will attract larger and more clients.
When making this transition, you`ll want to make it as easy as possible for you to move out, so:
- Consider if you want sharing an office suite or rent a separate office shared suite is obviously cheaper because you all share the same receptionist, conference room and other office supplies such as fax, copy machine and so on. You also eliminate loneliness for you will always have company in your office.
- Try finding an office as close home as possible. This will save you a lot of time and leave you with maximum time to work.
- Sign a short term lease. You never know if it`s going to work out as planned and you should always minimize the chance to get stuck in a place you don`t want to be in.
What if you still don`t want to get out of your home business?
Well, you must do something if your professionalism, bottom line or future growth are at stake.
- Use the services of business centers these temporary offices supply you with all the office needs like traditional office space, computers, copy machine and such, and sometimes even a receptionist. Use them when needed.
- Turn an extra room in your house to a warehouse or an office for employees.
- Outsource work instead of trying to get it all done in your home.
- If you just dont have space, try moving to a bigger house. Maybe build a new one to fit all your present and future business needs.
- Reorganize your present space consider hiring a professional organizer to get your office reorganized and better utilized.
