Tips for working at home productively and efficiently

Why work at home?

Working at home gives you the possibility to spend more time with your family, and may be the best idea for single parents, or ones whose spouse works all day. Maybe you just don`t want to make too much a sacrifice for your career. All these reasons and more drive more and more people to work at the comfort of their homes.

You must remember one thing – to work at home and remain productive means that when you are working – you are working. I don`t mean that when you hold the cellphone on one hand, the kid on the other and giving your computer commands with speech recognition (too futuristic?) you don`t work – I just mean that if you want to be productive – you must be in a "work" state of mind.

Define your workspace

First of all, and most important – have a special room for work. If impossible, have a special corner in the quietest room in the house.
Let your family know you`re working
Your family must know that when you are at your workspace – you`re working, and when you`re working, they must consider very carefully if they should ask you anything at your working times.
This varies greatly between different working at home people – take your time and carefully consider how much you can allow yourself to be interrupted while working, if at all.

Map your energy levels

Mostly, every person has his own daily routine, when you get up, eat, go to business meetings, nap, etc. one of the things most people miss out is, your energy level changes as the day passes by. Write it down by the hours – when were you completely awake and active, and when are you more passive and sleepy. Give this energy levels numeric values from 1 to 10 and write this in a chart (excel can do it with no problem) plan your working hours to the time you are most vigilant so your productivity will rise. If you`re too tired all day, consider taking a nap at noon or adding to your sleeping hours. You don`t want to be tired when working. It`s a pitiful waste of time, it`s bad for business and for your health.

Prepare plans for your home business

The secret of walking on rope is always looking at where you`re going. Business is very similar.
Know exactly what you must do, what your goals are and where exactly you are striving to get to. Prepare daily plans for assignments you must do, weekly plans monthly and so on. Always demand more than you did before, and keep getting the most out of yourself, but be realistic - don`t define yourself goals you can`t possibly achieve.

Enjoy working at home

Enjoying what you do is a must if you want to continue getting up from bed with a big smile on your face. There`s nothing worse than not liking what you do, and doing it self employed is even worse. Loving your business is a complete must for a productive home based business. If you feel you`re doing something you don`t like –just find something better!
By the way, the meaning of "insanity" is doing something over and over again and expecting different results.

Treat yourself well

There`s nothing wrong with taking a time out once in a while. When achieving a certain goal, take your spouse and kids to a vacation, or just hire a sitter and go out to a romantic evening. Breaking the daily routine is necessary both for your business and your personal life. Don’t become a workaholic!
